Following a report by Polygon yesterday Microsoft have squashed rumors that the Xbox One S will provide a small performance boost in games.
Speaking to EurogamerSpeaking to Eurogamer Albert Penello explained that while they had unlocked a small amount of extra CPU and GPU grunt for the 4K video playback it would have no effect on games.
“When we made changes to the box for 4K we unlocked a little bit more processing power to enable HDR. That’s it. It’s exactly the same architecture as the existing one,” Penello told Eurogamer.
“To support HDR, we give people access to a little more CPU and GPU. That’s it. It is so insignificant it is mind boggling it is being picked up.”
Phil Spencer backed this up, while being straight to the point and refreshingly honest, saying “But honestly, do not buy this box if you think you’re buying it to play your Xbox One games better, because it was not designed to go do that. It was designed to play your Xbox One games exactly the way your Xbox One does.”
The confusion has stemmed from Rob Ferguson who talked to Polygon about Gears of War, explaining that the game uses a dynamic resolution system and that the extra grunt could be used to mitigate performance drops in demanding sections.
Having said all this any increase in CPU or GPU power, no matter how small, will improve performance in some fashion, unless the extra power is literally only unlocked when 4K video playback is being used.
In other words, though, if you’re looking for a more powerful Xbox One you’ll have to wait for Scorpio.
